This article will provide some guidelines for this situation.First, take the time to read through the sample essay and try to figure out what the student is trying to say. Find a common thread that connects the sentences and paragraphs.While it might seem like a very simple task, reading the essay will be your first step in attempting to see if the essay was written by a reader and not an educator. Don't immediately think that it's the author's opinion, because most likely it isn't. You should also be concerned with whether or not the essay makes sense to the students who will read it. If the sample essay is written by a college student for college students, then there is a chance that the student wasn't tryin g to 'teach' them anything, but rather was simply trying to use their own experience to illustrate points and ideas.One way to tell if the essay was written by a student is to look at the grammar used. When a student writes an essay on their own, they are trying to build a community of understanding between themselves and other readers, so the first thing that a reader should do is look at how clearly the grammar of the piece is communicated.In most cases, if a writer has poor grammar, the reader will wonder how a person can even be considered for an advanced degree in a major. If a writer seems to have a real problem with grammar, then the student likely did not receive good grammar instruction in school and therefore has the benefit of poor grammar all throughout their academic career. Another sign that the essay was written by a student: if the student has a poor accent.Students who have trouble making their sentences flow and communicate clearly are most likely using a more conv ersational tone than necessary. They don't want to come across as 'too busy' or too 'busy,' so they decide to use slang words or slang phrases instead of the correct way to communicate an idea.This is where parents need to help out. Ask your student if they were able to get any feedback on the essay before they submitted it to you, and if they weren't able to get feedback, send them back the sample essay to be sure that the points they made were correct and understandable.Finally, time your conversations with your student. Try to schedule time to speak with each of them individually and ask them how they are doing. You will find that with these types of conversations, you will find that the student will be much more willing to give feedback and be more willing to share their true feelings with you.
